The beginnings of A Program in Miracles can be tracked back to the relationship between two individuals, Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford, equally of whom were prominent psychologists and researchers. The course's inception happened in the early 1960s when Schucman, who had been a clinical and study psychologist at Columbia University's University of Physicians and Surgeons, started to experience some internal dictations. She explained these dictations as originating from an inner voice that identified itself as Jesus Christ. Schucman initially resisted these experiences, but with Thetford's encouragement, she started transcribing the messages she received.

Over a period of seven decades, Schucman transcribed what can become A Class in Miracles, amounting to three sizes: the Text, the Workbook for Students, and the Guide for Teachers. The Text lies out the theoretical basis of the program, elaborating on the primary concepts and principles. The Workbook for Pupils contains 365 instructions, one for every time of the season, made to guide the reader through a daily exercise of using the course's teachings. The Handbook for Educators gives further advice on the best way to realize and show the principles of A Class in Miracles to others.

Among the main styles of A Course in Miracles is the idea of forgiveness. The course shows that correct forgiveness is the main element to inner peace and awakening to one's heavenly nature. In accordance with its teachings, forgiveness isn't only a moral or moral exercise but a simple change in perception. It requires letting go of judgments, issues, and the belief of  acim teacher, and alternatively, viewing the planet and oneself through the contact of enjoy and acceptance.
